Silver Spring Dance Conservatory
Policies and Reminders for SSDC dancers
Tuition
  1. Tuition is due every month. Checks should be made to SSDC and have the dancers name on the check so we can credit your account properly. Cash payments need to be labeled with the dancer’s name.
  2. No tuition refunds for absences.  A missed class should be made up in another class of the same level. Tuition may be credited on a very limited basis and subject to SSDC Board of Directors approval.
  3. Tuition assistance is available. Please see the director with question about tuition assistance.
Proper Dancewear
  1.   Proper dancewear is strongly recommended. This includes form- fitting clothing so teachers can assist dancers with proper body alignment and injury prevention.
  2. Properly fitting dance shoes are important for a dancer’s comfort and safety.
  3.   Ballet slippers should fit the dancer’s foot like a glove and offer all around support. Isotoner slippers are not allowed due to safety factors.
  4. Tap shoes should fit comfortably. Some dancers like to wear a pair of socks with their tap shoes. Flat taps (no high heels) for all beginning tappers.
  5. Jazz shoes and Jazz sneakers should have a non-marking sole, if possible.
  6. Pointe shoes should be professionally fitted (at least for the first time) and you need to remember elastics and ribbons.
  7. Dance shoes should not be worn outside. They pick up grit and dirt that can hurt a dance floor and ruin a shoe.8.   Street shoes are not allowed on studio floors. Socks, bare feet and dance shoes are fine.
Hair and jewelry should be dance-appropriate.
  1. Hair should be pulled back.
  2.  Most jewelry should be removed so it does not get lost or cause injury to the dancer. Post earrings are fine.
Class Conduct
  1. We expect our dancers to behave appropriately within the studio.
  2. Be kind to your fellow dancers and be supportive of each other.
  3. See the director with any issues and before serious problems occur. Complaints will remain confidential when possible and will be addressed in a general way. We can’t fix what we don’t know about!
  4. Class "rules" help prevent injury and help maintain a solid class structure.
  5. We see discipline as maintaining a safe and nurturing environment where the dancer can have fun and learn. Some days are better than others and if a child becomes a class distraction, he or she may be taken out of class for that day. This is not a punishment…it is necessary so that the other children can learn.
  6. Please remember that ALL dancers develop in different ways at different ages. Dance is not competitive here, and your child is evaluated on his or her own progress. Class levels are determined by a combination of physical, mental and emotional factors. Dance is different for each child.
  7. You are your child’s best advocate. Please do not hesitate to ask questions and help us do what is best for your dancer. Please ask if you need something or have a concern. We have all been there and done that, so we will most probably be able to offer some kind of help.
We hope you choose SSDC for your child’s dance education. You can expect:

  1. Highly qualified, Professional, creative and caring staff
  2. A variety of dance opportunities
  3. Newsletters, fund-raisers, projects (participation optional)

  5. Respect and honesty
  6. Good communication
  7. Comfortable, nurturing environment
