Silver Spring Dance Conservatory
Policies and Reminders for SSDC dancers
Tuition is due every month. Checks should be made to SSDC and have the dancers name on the check so we can credit
your account properly. Cash payments need to be labeled with the dancer’s name, also.
- No tuition refunds for absences. Missed classes should be made up. Tuition may be credited on a very limited basis, subject
to SSDC Board of Directors approval.
- Tuition assistance may be earned by helping behind the desk, cleaning and assisting with other tasks like sewing, painting
and general maintenance work. Please see Nancy if you have a need for financial assistance.
- Proper dancewear is strongly recommended.
This includes form- fitting clothing so teachers can assist dancers with
proper body alignment and injury prevention.
- If proper dance clothing is not worn, SSDC may provide the dancer with appropriate attire. We accept gently used, outgrown
dancewear to keep on hand for all situations. This includes shoes.
- Properly fitting dance shoes are important for a dancer’s comfort and safety. Ballet slippers should fit the dancer’s
foot like a glove and offer all around support. Isotoner slippers are not allowed due to safety factors.
- Tap shoes should fit comfortably. Some dancers like to wear a pair of socks with their tap shoes. Flat taps (no high heels)
for all beginning tappers.
- Street shoes are not allowed on studio floors. Socks, bare feet and dance shoes are fine.
- Jazz shoes and Jazz sneakers should have a non-marking sole, if possible.
- Pointe shoes should be professionally fitted (at least for the first time) and you need to remember elastics and ribbons.
- Dance shoes should not be worn outside. They pick up grit and dirt that can hurt a dance floor and ruin a shoe.
- Hair and jewelry should be dance-appropriate.
- Hair should be pulled back. Buns or secured braids for older Ballet dancers with long hair is best so that hair does
not become an issue when doing leaps, turns and other allegro movement. Older dancers may use bandanas.
- Children’s hair should be pulled back and secured
so the dancer does not have to fuss with clips, curls and
other distractions.
- Most jewelry should be removed
so it does not get lost or cause injury to the dancer. Small earrings are ok, as are
small rings. Toe rings, necklaces, bracelets, hoop or dangly earrings and pins should be left at home. Religious items may
be taped to the dancer’s skin if taking the item off is prohibited.
- We expect our dancers to dress and behave appropriately within the studio.
- Revealing tank tops, short shorts (without tights or proper underpinnings) and leotards without tights, shorts or leggings
are not allowed for teens.
- Be kind to your fellow dancers…they might not be having a good day and could use the support and friendship.
- See Nancy if any issues become bothersome – and please see Nancy before serious problems occur. Complaints will
remain confidential when possible and will be addressed in a general way. We can’t fix what we don’t know about!
- Class "rules" help prevent injury and help maintain a solid class structure.
- We see discipline as maintaining a safe and nurturing environment where the dancer can have fun and learn. Some days are
better than others and if a child becomes a class distraction, he or she may be taken out of class for that day. This is not
a punishment…it is necessary so that the other children can learn.
- Please remember that ALL dancers develop in different ways at different ages. Dance is not competitive here, and your
child is evaluated on his or her own progress. Class levels are determined by a combination of physical, mental and emotional
factors. Dance is different for each child.
- You are your child’s best advocate.
Please do not hesitate to ask questions and help us do what is best for
your dancer. Please ask if you need something or have a concern. We have all been there and done that, so we will most probably
be able to offer some kind of help.
